The following topics are covered across the English Language A-Level syllabus:
Four units, each a 50-mark paper, available on paper or onscreen. The International AS is Unit 1, Language: Context and Identity, and Unit 2, Language in Transition, 1 hour 45 minutes each and 50% of the AS each. Unit 3, Crafting Language (writing), and Unit 4, Investigating Language, are 2 hours each. In the full A Level each unit is 25%.
Unit 1 has two compulsory questions: a comparison of two unseen texts from 20th and 21st century sources (35 marks), then creating a new text for a specified audience (15 marks). Unit 2 also has two compulsory questions: one question on a transcript of 21st-century spoken English (25 marks), and one discussion question on written language of the 19th and 20th centuries (25 marks).
Two compulsory questions. First you create your own texts from unseen source texts linked to a single topic (20 marks); then you write a commentary reflecting on that writing process (30 marks).
You choose one research focus from four topic areas: Contemporary Global English, Children's Language Development, Language and Power, and Language and Technology. A subtopic for each is pre-released on Pearson's website, in May for the January exam and in January for the June exam, so that your research can focus on it.
